"Rose & Thistle" was originally printed by the Indigo Discharge method of fabric printing. The fabric was dyed first, and then a bleaching agent was block printed onto the areas intended to be a lighter blue. The cloth was then washed, revealing the pattern, which was then set and finished. Today's printing simulates the look of Morris' Indigo Discharge method.
