“Acanthus and Vine” was Morris’ first tapestry. He built his tapestry loom in his bedroom at Kelmscott House and began to weave it on May 1, 1879. Nicknamed “Cabbage and Vine” because of the unruliness of the leaves, it took 516 hours to weave, completing it on September 17, 1879. Morris’ notebook detailing the hours worked on the tapestry is at the Victoria & Albert Museum, along with a design for the panel.
