What is a "Double
Roll" of Wallpaper?
A "Double Roll" is a North American term
for a roll of wallpaper. The single roll / double
roll confusion has been with us since at least 1907
as one of our vintage wallpaper catalogues clearly
shows!
Most of our machine printed wallpapers are 20 1/2
inches wide by 33 feet long and this roll is called
a "double roll". It covers just over 56
square feet of wall. Several other wallpapers are
27 inches wide by 27 feet long, and this is also
called a "double roll". These rolls cover
nearly 61 square feet of wall. Check the dimensions
given on the wallpaper catalogue page. Be sure you,
or your installer, estimate and order in DOUBLE
ROLLS only!
Machine Printed Wallpapers
and Borders
Our machine printed wallpapers and borders are all
quality printed papers, with good lightfastness,
fully trimmed and packaged in 33' or 27’(double)
rolls. Most are not prepasted, except for the “5000”
series wallpapers. A few are
vinyl-coated papers, which is noted on the catalogue
page. All the machine printed wallpapers are considered
“washable” and can be gently washed
with a sponge, but should not be scrubbed.
Handprinted Wallpapers
Hand Print wallpapers are priced and sold in SINGLE
ROLLS. These rolls are 21 inches wide by 21 feet
long and cover almost 37 square feet of wall. If
you order more than a single roll, then your order
of wallpaper is often shipped in a continual length
or several triple bolts for larger orders, which
makes cutting the paper more economical.
The Hand Print wallpapers are
untrimmed. The pattern is printed 21" wide
on a wider piece of paper, and requires careful
trimming with a metal straight edge before hanging.
We recommend that a professional installer with
proven experience with this type of wallpaper be
used, to trim and install the Hand Prints. These
wallpapers should not be considered “washable”.
Some dirt or spots may be able to be removed with
an artist’s soft rubber gum eraser. Take care
not to overuse the eraser and burnish the surface
of the wallpaper.
How long are the rolls of wallpaper border?
Check the dimensions given on the wallpaper border
catalogue page. Some borders are 33 feet long, others
are 16 1/2 feet long and some are 15 feet long.
How much wallpaper do I
need to order?
We would like to help you with your estimate, but
we are not on site. Your measurements alone are
not enough for us to estimate accurately. The specifics
of your installation, such as built-in bookcases,
over-size windows etc, need to be factored in. Have
a qualified wallpaper installer estimate the amount
of paper, making sure they know the size of the
roll and the pattern repeat of the paper.
Or you can estimate the amount,
using our Wallpaper Calculator
page. This calculator can be used for the 33' long
double rolls only.
Please try to ensure that you order
enough to complete your project. Although we would
be delighted to sell you more, we cannot guarantee
that stock from the same batch will be available.
There are sometimes subtle variations in colour
between batches.
Can I return extra wallpaper?
No. We regret that we cannot accept returns of wallpaper
or cut fabric.
Are the wallpapers pre-pasted?
Most of our machine printed wallpapers, and all
of our hand print wallpapers are not prepasted.
The "5000" series of wallpapers are prepasted.
What kind of adhesive do
I use for wallpapers?
Our wallpaper is applied with either a traditional
wheat starch or cellulose paste. Do not use pre-mixed
vinyl based pastes. They will cause spotting and
staining of the papers.
Are the wallpapers washable?
The machine print wallpapers can be gently cleaned
with a sponge and warm water, and are considered
"washable" rather than "scrubbable".
The hand print wallpapers are
not considered "washable".
Can I use wallpapers in
a bathroom?
Wallpaper can be used in a bathroom. Provided there
is adequate ventilation to remove excess steam,
then even non vinyl-coated papers can be used. For
a heavy-use bathroom, or one where moisture on the
walls is a concern, then consider using one of the
vinyl-coated wallpapers.
Can I get samples of wallpaper?
Yes. To ensure colour matches, or to check on the
appropriateness of the material for your project,
we recommend ordering samples.
