Wild Tulip Wallpaper and Fabric – designed by William Morris in 1884
We are very proud to add even more wallpapers to our own exclusive designs and for the first time, we are adding three printed cotton fabrics. Inspired by the Garden, our new designs in 12 colourways of wallpaper and three printed cotton fabrics form a natural choice for home decoration.
The wallpapers range from delicately coloured William Morris designs, (“Wild Tulip” and “Bird & Anemone”) to a bold, large-scale floral Damask, which stayed popular from its design in 1892 through to the 1920’s, as well as a lush, richly-coloured document design of gilded ferns from 1890.
Three printed cotton fabrics coordinate with the William Morris “Wild Tulip” wallpapers. The fabrics are the first printed fabrics from Charles Rupert Designs and are exclusively printed for our business.
We had already decided to print “Wild Tulip” – a William Morris design from 1884 - from an archival document in the Charles Rupert Design Archives. We matched two of the colourways to historic fragments, but we also wanted to print a further colourway that we had only seen at Wightwick Manor, a National Trust property in England.

Wightwick Manor, near Wolverhampton, England
Contact was made, and permission was granted to visit the house and match the colours of the original William Morris wallpaper on the walls of the Dining Room at Wightwick.
The “Wild Tulip” wallpaper design has eight colours, and it uses Morris’ technique of fine dots throughout the design to define the flowers and leaves, and give them shape. We have painstakingly copied original artwork to give the same shape and feel as the original hand-blocked papers of Morris’ day.

What often appears in photos to be a terra-cotta colourway, is actually a raspberry background, with creams, red, brick and terra-cotta as secondary colours. A very handsome and striking colourway, the match for the paper in Wightwick’s Dining Room is now available again as a wallpaper.

The entrance court at Wightwick Manor
Wightwick (pronounced “Wittick”) is a splendid house, built in two stages in 1887 and 1891 in the Medieval Revival style. William Morris’ company was entrusted with the interior decoration, and the result is a rich interior of wood paneling, Morris wallpapers, stenciled beams, and comfortable furniture and carpets.

Our second intriguing wallpaper comes from a Canadian Historic House. In 1985, I visited Guisachan House in Kelowna, in the interior of British Columbia.

Guisachan House, Kelowna, British Columbia. c1892
I was shown around, and I admired the original wallpaper that had been patched and carefully restored. A small piece of the wallpaper was given to me for our archives.
Lady Aberdeen wrote: "The bungalow sort of house… was really charming: kitchen, dining-room, sitting-room, hall, papered with Japanese gold and crimson papers… Then four good-sized bedrooms… and a broad verandah round three sides of the house."

Lord & Lady Aberdeen |
||
This wallpaper was installed in this house on their ranch by Lord and Lady Aberdeen in 1891. Lord Aberdeen was Governor General of Canada from 1893 to 1898.
Late in 2006, I received a telephone call from the Conservator for the house, explaining that the site had suffered a fire, and could we help restore the wallpaper that had been badly charred? (Most of the house was, thankfully, all right). I was able to go to my files, pull out the original piece that I had been given in 1985, and say that not only could I help, but I could match the original colours from my intact fragment in our files.

The sample with original colouring and intact gilded ferns at the bottom,
and the charred and smoke-damaged wallpaper from the house, where the
gilding had turned brown.
The artwork for the overall design was recreated from the charred remains, and the colours matched to the original fragment in the Charles Rupert Designs archives.
The wallpaper was reprinted, using vintage wallpaper machines, as the original had been printed.

The resulting wallpaper has been named “Aberdeen Ferns”, in honour of Lord and Lady Aberdeen. The wallpaper is a lush and gilded design from the c1890 period, and of a style rarely reproduced today..
Guisachan House (pronounced Goo-shi-gan) had been built for Lord and Lady Aberdeen as a residence on their ranch in British Columbia. Guisachan House was named after Lady Aberdeen's home in Scotland.
The Kelowna area often gets very hot in the summer – up to 100º F. or more – and before air-conditioning, one can imagine the relief you would feel walking into a cool sitting room surrounded by this green and gold wallpaper. A real oasis from the heat outside.

Guisachan House is now preserved and operated by the
Central Okanagan Heritage Society.
The third background story is about the “Chelsea Damask” wallpaper from “The Garden Collection”. We had acquired the design from the archives of an old, established, eastern American wallpaper company that was regrettably going out of business.
We had also acquired the original woodblock that the paper was printed from in the 1890’s. We put the design ‘on-side’ to print soon, as it was a handsome and timely pattern to reintroduce to our customers, as the popularity for damask designs was gaining ground once again.

While visiting Asheville, North Carolina in February 2006, when “The Historic Wallpapers Collection” was being launched at the Grove Park Arts & Crafts Show”, we visited Biltmore House. Biltmore was built in the 1890’s by George Vanderbilt. “Biltmore” is the largest house built in North America, and the 250 rooms of the house and the 8,000 acre estate are extraordinary.

Biltmore House on a cold February Day
One of the third floor bedrooms had the matching wallpaper to the design and woodblock in the Charles Rupert Designs Archives. We contacted the curator, who kindly showed us a fragment of their original wallpaper from the bedroom in a gold and brown colourway. We have printed the design in three new colourways: Pale green on Cream; Ivory on Putty; and Slate on Bronze.
