Picture hooks and picture moulding became popular in the mid 1880's,
and continued in fashion through the 1920's and early 30's. Picture
hooks allowed people to hang pictures on their walls without damaging
the plaster with nail holes. Changes to the arrangement of paintings
were easily made. The historic photograph shows a variety of methods
of hanging pictures using picture hooks. It is usually best to use
two hooks (and two pieces of wire) when hanging large pictures or
mirrors. Brass hooks were generally used in Victorian Houses, and
bronze-finish hooks used in Craftsman or Arts and Crafts homes.
Useful Tip: These hooks usually fit most picture mouldings.
However, Solid Brass hooks can be bent to conform to different profiles.
Brass Plated hooks should not be bent, as the plating may pop off.
Useful Tip: The higher up the back of the picture frame
the wire is attached, the less tendency there is for the picture
frame to tilt out from the wall.
There is a minimum
of three picture hooks per order. They can be
different hooks.
After that, you may purchase any quantity.

Picture Wire
The picture wire that we offer comes in three weights and is made
of stranded brass-gilt wire in 7.5m (about 24') long coils. Our
wire is meant to be visible! The attractive brass-gilt colouring
reflects light and is less visible on walls (especially wallpapered
walls), than the dark braided steel wire commonly sold through hardware
stores, which is designed to be hidden behind picture frames.
