History of Wool Baize
We tracked down this wonderful traditional fabric in England,
where the company making it has been in operation since
1783. A durable woven fabric, and not to be confused with
felt, baize is often compared with billiard table cloth.
Wool baize has many traditional applications, such as
covering the tops of card tables or lining showcases.
Baize has also been used to line built-in sideboards;
lining silverware drawers or cupboards. It has also covered
the "servant's
side" of a door between kitchen and dining room in
large old homes in order to help sound-proof kitchen noise.
You can read references to "behind the green-baize
door" in old books - though sometimes other colours were also
used. The baize was mounted on the kitchen side of the
door with with brass-headed tacks, sometimes in a decorative
design.
The baize also makes wonderful protective day-time
table covers for dining room tables as seen in our historic
photograph.
